Hello, Richard Armitage!!

WOW!!!  Still trying to catch my breath!    It’s been a great day!!!

Yesterday was a great day too.   Hubby drove me around Oakland University to my fave vantage point for shooting pictures of the main scene of the tornado movie being filmed there.  He convinced me to go take my pictures even though there were crew members working there. Another man appeared out of nowhere and was giving the others some instructions. He smiled at us so I asked if I could take some pictures. He said go right ahead….take as many as you want. He asked which actor I was there to see, and I said Richard Armitage. He smiled again and said, “Oh, Richard! He’s our lead! Nice guy!” (I squeeeee’d silently in my head lol) I asked if it was alright to ask him a few questions and he said, “Shoot! I’ll answer whatever I can.”

I asked if he was familiar with the plot, and he said, “Oh yes…I’m the stunt coordinator.” First off, he verified that Richard is clean-shaven. The story takes place in Silverton, Oklahoma. Richard is playing a school teacher with *two* sons and Nathan Kress is playing the younger of the two. He said they will be filming there through Friday.

I took pictures of all the trailers, the craft services “tent” and a couple storm-chaser vehicles.

We drove back around to the main entrance so I could take some pictures from that side. The policeman told me I was more than welcome. I noticed a woman and a man walking on the side of the street opposite the parking lot. They didn’t appear to be part of the crew so I paid them no mind. I took my pictures, then the woman crossed over to me and said, “Are you here to see….” and she held up her Richard Armitage sign.  I asked if she was RAlover, and she said Yes! We talked for quite awhile until hubby let me know we had to get going so he could go to work. Before I left, I told her where the actors’ trailers were.  I had fun talking with her…she is really nice!

I spoke to her on the phone a few hours later and found out she hit the jackpot!  She got to meet Richard, got some pictures, and she was over the moon.    He told her that her sign was rubbish.  I got a kick out of that!  She told him that another fan had been there and he asked if she was coming.  She called me as soon as she left.  Unfortunately, I didn’t answer my phone!!!  *facedesk*  I was so happy for her.

RAlover suggested I should try again today.  Judiang talked me into making a sign so I ran to Walmart today for supplies.  While I did that, my husband and daughter took the motorcycle up to Oakland University.

My husband called me while I was on my way to the campus.  He said he took a stroll down the hill and talked to a woman outside the trailers.  He asked if Richard was there and would he be available to meet me once I arrived.  She said, he wasn’t there yet, but would be soon – hubby should hang out up on the hill and she would wave him back down when Richard was available.

A few minutes later he called back and said Richard is in makeup and if I don’t get there before he goes to costuming we would not be able to take pictures.   I was almost there, but had to take a most convoluted route – snaking my way through three more parking lots to where my husband was.

We didn’t have to wait long before the woman waved, and THERE HE WAS, striding towards us.  We ran down the hill (me praying that I would not have a Bridget Jones moment and fall on my arse, roll down the hill and end up at Richard’s feet).

My husband got there first and Richard met him with his hand outstretched and a “Hi, I’m Rich!”  They shook hands and my husband introduced me and Richard shook my hand.  All I could say was, “Hi!  I cannot believe I forgot my camera!”  He laughed at that and asked where we came from.  I told him we lived just down the road.  He smiled and shook hands with my daughter then bent down to talk to my 6-year-old son. Richard tried to shake his hand, but “Boy” had his hands full – a bottle of water in his right hand and a Captain America toy in his left.  I took the bottle so he could shake Richard’s hand, but he transferred the toy and offered Richard his left hand.   Richard asked him his name as they were shaking hands, but Boy wouldn’t answer.  I told him Boy’s name, and Richard took the Captain America figure and said, “Cool!  Captain America!!”

I told Richard I had brought another sign and showed it to him.  He cracked up.  He said, “We have to get a picture with this!!  Come over here!”  I walked over to him and he said, “Get in close.”   (SQUEEE)  He put his arm around my shoulder and grabbed the corner of the sign.  He told “Girl” to get in the picture and asked her to hold the other corner.

Of course, it was windy, and the wind blew all of my hair into my face. Grrr.  I hurried to push it back and put my arm around his waist (!)  *swoon*  My husband took the picture with his cell phone.

I asked if it was okay if I asked a few questions.  He said yes, so I asked him if he would be using a British or American accent for the film.  He paused.  His eyes twinkled at me as he smiled and said, “American.”

He started to leave, but I asked if he had time for one more question.  He turned to me and I grabbed his hand.  I said, “Please tell me your character’s name is not John.”  He didn’t quite hear me so he leaned in closer and I repeated what I had said.  He looked perplexed for a moment then laughed.  He said, “No, I am not John.”    Lame, I know, but I had to ask!

“Girl”, who talks to NO ONE, not even her teachers, asked if she could get a picture with him.  He said sure, and put his arm around her.  Then he said, “(Boy) come get in the picture!”  Boy stood next to his sister but Richard talked him into standing on Richard’s other side.  We snapped some pictures, and the woman said, “Richard, time to go or you’ll be late.”

I told him it was an absolute pleasure to meet him.  He smiled as he walked away.

And I squee, squee, squee’d all the way home!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors – my head is still spinning!!!  The whole thing took less than 3 minutes, but it was phenomenal!!

I’d like to go on record and say that my husband the BEST husband on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have definitely brightened my evening and warmed the coddles of my tiny heart. It’s so good to read something confirm what we all think about Richard and know he truly is a good man, kind and generous. I can’t believe you heard him laugh, that you put you arm around his waist! Oh, my gosh, I probably would have started to shake like a leaf or blabber a bunch of nonsensical chatter, since my brain would have frozen in shock. Could you tell us about his eyes? Are they blue or hazel? I am obsessed with his eyelashes! Please tell your husband that his behavior towards you has given me hope that there are still a bunch of great men out there and I need not give up my search! Hope you can answer my question. Now I’m off to Tumblr to re-blog your story. Thank you!!!

I was grinning from ear to ear and spent all day signing up for C19 and AA and reading and squeeing and generally thinking how happy i am that i have this crush because not only is RA clearly a great guy but his fans are lovely too. It was only in the evening that i realised i hadn’t taken any of the panadeine forte the hospital had sent me home with! Those pleasure endorphins must have been rushing around my body and stopping the pain. And then today, just when i thought it couldn’t get any better, i read about your encounter. I’m so happy for you. And him being nice to your children makes me even more happy. So it is official – RA is the better than panadeine!

Itsy, I’d like to agree that you do INDEED have a fantabulous husband – he just so GETS YOU and pushes for the best life experiences for you!!! 😀

I remember a few weeks ago waking up @ 4am here in London – thinking, “Hey, I’m in the ‘chat’ time window – I wonder if anyone’s there?” It was you, me, and Judi holding the fort at the end – and Judi and I were discussing Chicago or some other topic – when you suddenly burst in with ‘Hubby just came in telling me a woman who works as security guard has been stationed at this nearby location where they are filming a tornado movie’. I remembered thinking then, “Wow, that is SOME HUBBY out scouting information for you!”

And of course, he did EVEN BETTER, mobilizing you and the family for the outing!! (I have secretly been hoping for something like this for you since that chat session!) 😉

I swear, just when you think you can’t love him anymore than you do he goes and does stuff like this and makes you fall for him all over again.
And as for him calling himself ‘Rich’….*sigh* Love that. Thanks again for sharing this with us.

And that husband of yours…..He’s a Keeper!!! Gold Star for him!!

Itsy, you and RALover kept me so busy through yesterday, reading and re-reading, trying to find my way around the dif forums to grab all the details you’d written (oh gosh, all this million comments!), being in a constant state of excitement (maybe a bit overwhelmed as you were), staring at your pics with a gorgeously handsome Richard….. I’m still processing, even it was NOT me having seen him in the flesh ;-( but now I’m leastways up to put in my two cents:
WOW!!!! Well done, ladies (with a little help of friends!! hi,hi)! What a wonderful experience for you and RALover and it certainly was of advantage to have your kids and an incredible supportive husband at your side to back you up. Lucky ladies, you!! Thank you so much for reporting it to us right away. This really felt somewhat we had a chance to be there as well. 🙂

    Glad the sign worked!
Did your son realise RA was Heinz Kruger in Captain America ? RA was very restrained in not mentioning it!
Think we would all worry about having a Bridget Jones or Geraldine Granger moment if we met him!
You’ll be on Cloud Nine for days…

ItsJSforMe!!! OMG! OMG! I have been panting and squeeing and running around the house shrieking as I read your account. I contemplated jumping on the bed but restrained myself. My 2-year-old keeps asking “what dat noise?” And I keep saying “It’s mommy, having an overexcited fangirl moment.” (And believe me, “girl” is a stretch in my case…).

Yes, yes, your husband is amazing, but let’s get back to Richard. RICHARD! “Hi, I’m Rich.” OMG! You put your arm around his waist! OMG! OMG!

OK, gotta go. I have to get my heartrate and breathing back to normal (if possible) and resume being a responsible parent. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your experience. Loved the “rubbish” sign.

Now that I’ve calmed down (took nearly 24 hours), I can add how happy I am for you that you got to have that experience and that he was so kind to you and your family, and to thank you again for letting us experience it through your wonderful report.

I sent my husband the link to your blog, and he read it all and liked it. He said Richard sounds like a genuinely nice person, which we had suspected from prior fan reports. He noted, however, that Richard looks older. I guess he had to get in a small dig to balance the extremity of my fangirl reaction. Usually it’s snide comments about the length of Richard’s nose, but since your pictures did not show our man in profile….

My husband also reiterated something that he’s said before, and I’m curious about your thoughts on it: that if the situation were reversed, and the lovely supportive husbands were all agog about some hot female star to the extent that we are about RA, the wives would voice anger, jealousy, deem the interest–or at least the expression of the interest– “inappropriate.” I’d like to say he’s wrong, but I suspect I would feel somewhat insecure if he started “fanboying” about Keira Knightley or Angelina Jolie or someone, and my insecurity might come out as anger. If you have moment to share your thoughts on this dilemma, I’d be grateful, ItsJSforme! Thank you!

I haven’t been ignoring you, Aurora; I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to answer. It’s difficult for me to say how I would respond if hubby started “fanboying” about an actress. We’ve been married nearly 19 years, and I can safely say he is not the type of guy who would do something like that. But, on the off chance that he did someday, I honestly do not think I would handle it as well as he has my “fangirling.” He is a much better person than I. 🙂

Hi, ItsJSforme. Thank you for your candid reply! Yes, I’m with you. I don’t think my husband would take up “fanboying” either, but if he did…I’d like to think I’d try to be supportive, but not so sure I would succeed! In any case, thanks again for your report and replies, and wishing you a Happy Armitage Day tomorrow!

I’d also like to know if your son was carrying his Captain America figure for any particular reason. And, if your family weren’t fans of his before, are they now? Will they be coming with you to see The Hobbit and Category Six?

    • ItsJSforMe says:

Thanks Jaydee 🙂 Hubby went with me twice to see CA on the big screen and he watches Strike Back with me. He loves to make wisecracks about Sir Guy and all his black leather while Robin Hood is on the TV. I have no doubts that he will accompany me to see Category Six – he went with me to two of the tornado filming locations so I was able to look & take pictures while he drove! The Hobbit films are not to be missed – my whole family loves the LotR trilogy.

Before we left the house, I asked Boy to grab a few toys as I wasn’t sure how long we would have to wait. He is a major SuperHero Squad / Avengers fan so I wasn’t surprised that Cap was one of the toys he brought along.

When I tucked Boy in bed last night, I asked him if he had fun meeting Richard. His response: “Yes! He liked my Captain America. Too bad he didn’t see my Hulk!!!”

    • Pardonnez mois. Rubbish = merde. It’s a word for when something has a crappy quality, like a poster that has not been made well, nor with good materials. It’s also equivalent to “bullsh*t”. [My apologies to everyone. I normally do not ever use those words, but she asked for an explanation. Please so not ban me from this site! Thank you.]

I spent the day feeling sorry for myself after applying for the fifteen hundredth job in the year and a half that I have been unemployed, and thought nothing could make me feel better. Then I read your lovely blog about meeting Richard, with your wonderful family. Believe or not, it actually gave me a sense of hope. If something as great as meeting the kind and generous (not to mention handsome) Richard Armitage is possible, make there still is hope of me finding a job after all. Thanks for the pick me up.

Glad that you also got some much needed theRApy* from this too Tamera. Being out of work and getting so many knock backs is devastating – i hope you can also find strength in knowing that RA also struggled for a long time before he got a break. It’s amazing to think now that an agent told him that probably wouldn’t happen for him – i think he would know exactly how you feel right now. Fingers crossed something good comes your way soon.

*I love the idea of theRApy – thanks for pointing that out ItsJSforMe!

@Bollyknickers: when I joined the fandom just over a year ago, I heard (saw) comments from people talking about how “theRApeutic” Richard related things can be. I totally agree with them – watching his DVDs, listening to his audiobooks, etc. is usually guaranteed to bring me out of a funk. I hope “theRApy” is one of the terms JasRangoon plans to add to The RAD (Richard Armitage Dictionary) site. *gently nudges Jas*
